Salamanca: Fiestas and Folklore

Not only in Salamanca itself, but specially in the villages around take place several traditional festivals of great interest.

Carnival in Ciudad Rodrigo is such an event. It is similar to the famous Sanfermines of Pamplona in that bulls run through the streets of the town to the bullring, and several amateur-toreros, who want to prove their braveness, ahead of them.

In February takes place the Fiesta del Almendro in Fregeneda. It is a celebration of the blosssoming almond-trees, and during the festival people in boats cross the river Duero, the frontier between Spain and Portugal.

A curious history has "Lunes de Aguas", at Easter Monday in Salamanca: in the middle-ages people crossed the river in boats decorated with flowers to bring back to town the prostitutes, who have not been allowed to stay there during the 40 days of Lent. Today the festival is rather of familiar character.

Corpus Christi offers splendid processions, to watch them inside of the Cathedral is particularly beautiful.

On August, 15th you may visit La Alberca, where takes place the Ofertorio, a celebration to the honour of the Holy Virgin, which is of particular interest to the tourist for its folkloristic style and the regional dresses.
