Torremolinos is the place where during the 1960s the fairy-tale of the Costa del Sol began: the town developed from the sleepy little fishing village just a few kilometers outside of Malaga into a gigantic tourist center, attracting visitors from all over the world.
The huge hotel complexes which have been built right at the beach have resulted in plenty of criticism to Torremolinos, which is why efforts have been made recently to shake off the image of mass tourism and to increase focus on quality. Several public gardens have been added and the city's appearance has changed significantly during the last years.
Of course, Torremolinos is not the place to look for lonely beaches, especially during the summer season, but the broad and well kept beaches are among the most beautiful of the entire Costa del Sol: Playa de Bajondillo, Playamar, Los Alamos, La Carihuela and Montemar.
Along these beaches there is the beach promenade, Paseo Maritimo, which continues up to Benalmadena and is lined with shops, bars and restaurants. At the beach La Carihuela, however, time seems to have stopped: in the middle of this modern tourist resort you can still find old and simple fishermen's houses and get an idea of how the Costa del Sol may have looked 50 years ago. Those who like to eat good fish should in any case try the restaurants and Chiringuitos (small beach-locals) in this area.
In particular it is the great sport and leisure facilities that are so exciting about Torremolinos, from windsurfing and pedal boats to water skiing and paragliding, everything that's fun is offered. And anyone who still has enough energy after a long day at the beach and an excellent dinner, can look forward to the vibrant nightlife in the numerous pubs and nightclubs.
