Torrevieja is situated close to two large salt water lagoons, "Laguna de la Mata" and "Laguna de Torrevieja", which cause a very particular and healthy microclimate.Also scenically the Laguna de Torrevieja is something special with its pink coloured water  . This colour is caused by a rare kind of bacteria which exists only in very particular climes.The main attraction of Torrevieja, however, are its splendid beaches with a total length of 14 kilometers. From north to south we reach fist the beach Playa de La Mata , located next to the natural park "Laguna de la Mata", which is the largest beach of the region with a length of 2 kilometers and wide dunes of fine sand. It can be accessed easily by the beach promenade, where you will find many bars and restaurants. The beach is well equipped and also offers disabled access.In the south of it there is the cape Cervera with the beach Playa de Cabo Cervera. The old guard tower "Torre del Moro" is today a look-out and offers a great panorama from the cape of Santa Pola in the north to the coast of Mar Menor in the south. Next we reach Las Calas, very quiet beaches which are favoured by divers. Within the town there is the Playa de Los Locos, a very lively beach with a lot of facilities. The best known beach of Torrevieja is Playa del Cura, with numerous restaurants and beach bars ("Chiringuitos"). One regional speciality which you should not miss is "Pulpo Seco": squid is dried in the sun for several days, then cooked over an open fire and served with olive oil and lemon juice. It is typically accompanied by a "Paloma", aniseed liqueur with water and ice. After this, there are still a couple of smaller beaches as well as natural basins in the following rock formations. Torrevieja disposes of two marinas which offer many facilities for water sports. At the fishing port you can book excursions to Tabarca Island. Also the cultural offerings of Torrevieja are worth to be mentioned, with exhibitions, theater, concerts and festivals. |
