Burgos: Fiestas and Folklore |
|
| | |
|
|
Folklore in the province of Burgos is of most varied origins. There are archaic traditions, tracing back to the very first cultures of the Iberian peninsula, Moorish and medieval ones, the latter going back to the time of the reconquest of the land by Christians. The are numerous "fiestas" of very different characteristics, some of them profoundly spiritual and solemn, others informal and cheerful.
During Easter Week there are processions of great solemnity, specially on Good Friday.
Corpus Christi: In the Monastery of "Las Huelgas" there is a celebration for the victory against the Moors (1212), followed by a procession of "Curpillos" the next day. The most interesting event is perhaps the "Fiesta de San Juan del Monte" in "Miranda del Ebro", with spectacular processions in traditional outfit, including beautifully decorated horse coaches.
In Fuentelcésped takes place the "Danza de los Palos" on 13th of June, a traditional festival with picturesque dresses. On 29th of June starts of series of "Fiestas" in Burgos, continuing the following days and including bullfights and folkloristic exhibitions.
On 5th of August there is a unique spectacle in Espinosa de los Monteros: an archaic war-dance of pagan ritual.
On 8th of September is celebrated the traditional Moorish dance "Canta la Mora" in Peñaranda del Duero, and on 12th of September takes place a beautiful "Desfile de Carrozas" , a parade of horse coaches, in Miranda del Duero.
